About This Place

La Cantinaccia del Popolo, nestled in the charming heart of Sorrento on Vico Terzo Rota, is a quintessential Italian restaurant that brilliantly captures the essence of traditional Southern Italian cuisine. This beloved eatery has earned a well-deserved reputation for serving some of the most authentic and mouthwatering Italian dishes in the region, drawing locals and travelers alike to its vibrant tables.

The moment you step inside, the atmosphere envelopes you with warmth and rustic charm. The interior is a delightful blend of classic Italian trattoria vibes enhanced by the lively charm of the deli counter, complete with cured meats hanging overhead — a feast for the eyes before the meal even begins. Many guests find themselves enchanted by the cozy, buzzing ambiance, especially when seated near this aromatic centerpiece, offering a truly immersive dining experience.

The menu is a treasure trove of superb dishes that celebrate Sorrento’s rich culinary heritage. Signature plates like the Gnocchi Alla Sorrentina showcase pillowy handmade gnocchi drenched in a rich tomato sauce topped with melting mozzarella — every bite bursts with comforting, soulful flavors. The Grilled Squid Fish is a delicate marvel, perfectly charred and tender, capturing the freshness of the sea with simple but masterful preparation. Fans of seafood will be equally enchanted by the Spaghetti Alle Vongole, where al dente pasta meets briny clams in a garlic-tinged sauce that sings of the Mediterranean coast.

For those craving heartier fare, the Bistecca Alla Fiorentina offers a robust, juicy steak cooked to perfection, embodying the robust rusticity of Tuscan cuisine right here in Sorrento. Meanwhile, dishes like the Parmigiana Di Melanzane unfold layers of tender eggplant, savory tomato, and creamy cheese in a timeless classic that comforts and delights with each forkful. Not to be missed, the Ravioli Al Gorgonzola delights with its rich, creamy filling, perfectly balanced by the subtle bite of gorgonzola cheese.

Complement your meal with the house white wine, a crisp and refreshing accompaniment that enhances the flavors on your plate. And for a sweet finale, the Dessert Della Casa offers a homemade touch — the chocolate soufflé, as described by delighted patrons, is a decadent masterpiece so irresistible that many insist on a second helping.

What truly makes La Cantinaccia del Popolo stand out is not just the food but the genuinely warm and welcoming service. Customers consistently praise the friendly, attentive staff who make you feel like part of the family from the moment you arrive. Whether you’re fortunate enough to walk right in for lunch, like some visitors, or prepared to wait for that coveted table in the evening, the experience is always worth it. The restaurant’s popularity is evident — it’s featured in Rick Steves' Italy guide and adored by food tour groups and local regulars alike, underscoring its status as a genuine culinary gem.

La Cantinaccia del Popolo is more than just a place to eat; it is a celebration of Italian food culture in its purest form, serving dishes that are crafted with love, tradition, and impeccable attention to detail. Whether you're savoring a plate of Spaghetti and Three Meatballs, delighting in the crisp fried calamari of Frittura Solo Calamari, or indulging in the fresh vibrancy of Verduras A Elegir, every bite tells a story of passion and heritage. This is the kind of dining experience that stays with you long after the last forkful and makes returning to Sorrento a delicious inevitability.

Came for lunch on a Wednesday early afternoon and to our surprise we walked in and got a table straight away. I can't speak highly enough of this restaurant! The food was up there with the best food I had on our Sorrento/Naples holiday! Decor is fantastic, don't usually say this but I'd recommend sitting inside, loved being sat next to the deli counter and the ham hanging from the ceiling really made the place feel cozy and old fashioned, felt like you were eating in somewhere really authentic. Staff were great, really friendly and attentive. I don't have a bad word to say about this restaurant and if you come to Sorrento and don't eat here I can confidently say you've made a mistake

We’ve traveled to many cities in Italy on vacation and out of all the places, this place was the BEST! The food was excellent: zucchini flowers were 10/10, gnocchi was amazing, and the penne alla cantinaccia was incredible!! The chocolate soufflé was SO GOOD that we ordered a second one! The staff were so friendly and welcoming! Definitely worth waiting in line for a seat here! We will make a point to come back here multiple times next time we’re in town!

I passed by this restaurant at night and always long line so I decided to try it after reading good positive reviews. Me and my partner went here for lunch and was no wait. I ordered pasta with seafood in red sauce and my partner got the ravioli. His ravioli is 10/10. I think the best homemade one i tried so far. My dish was hugh and I couldn’t finish it but test so good. If you realize everywhere you go around here there is a fees per person when you dine in but not at this place they didn’t charge you for that. The big bottle of sparkling only 3euro. We also ordered a side of 3 meatballss which are delicious and only 6euro for that. I ordered it somewhere else and they charged you for 16euro for 3 meatball.

We set out to find a special Italian restaurant and stumbled upon this hidden gem, not realizing how renowned it truly is. First off, this place is listed in Rick Steves' Italy guide as a must-try spot . Just five minutes after we sat down, a food tour group joined us, making it clear that this restaurant is famous for its incredible Italian cuisine. And boy, were they right—absolutely wowed! Both of our dishes were fantastic. My seafood pasta was overflowing with fresh seafood—more than pasta! Don't miss out on their Lemoncello Spritz and the exceptional Taurasi wines. I highly recommend giving this place a visit. No reservations needed, so go ahead and enjoy a true Italian feast!

We got extremely lucky and happened to book a hotel opposite this local favourite. Truly blown away. On both occasions, we had a combination of excellent service from a gentleman and (we think) the one female serving tables. There may be more of course but she was pretty phenomenal at her job (and we work in hospitality). The restaurant is fun, has a wonderful atmosphere and the food is just something else! Every dish we had was an explosion of flavour; clean plates every time. We can’t recommend a visit to this restaurant enough. In our experience, watching from our pool, the queues were fairly steady. Lunchtime seemed to be calmer and easier to get a table (we went for lunch both times) but the team work hard to accommodate and the queue does go down fairly quickly (although, as a customer, you don’t feel rushed). We have 3 days left of our holiday and will be back for one last visit! Excellent.

We just had the best meal of our Italian trip here. Absolutely incredible. The food, service and quality is exceptional. Well worth lining up for. We dined here twice and will likely again before leaving Sorrento, it’s that good. The ravioli con pomadorini was delicious ans was the polpetti and pasta con melanzane. The rib eye beef steak even better than we had in Tuscany! The line was really long tonight and we paid for it with a terrible meal elsewhere. Do yourself a favour and line up - there’s a reason the line is so long. The owner and all staff are all super friendly and maintain exceptional customer service to all customers, even with the masses that come through. We look forward to dining there again asap!

This is the best restaurant in Sorrento. Stand in the line, just wait it out (they'll give you cheese or some other goodies if the line is long). The food is awesome, no coperto or cover charge (a rarity in Sorrento!) - and the atmosphere is awesome. Wine and food portions are extremely generous. This is how a restaurant should be - it feels like a family run place where the workers are having fun, great decoration. Servers were joking with the kids in our group and they had such a fun time. Prices are extremely reasonable for the quality of food, and the service received. Oh, and the Gorgonzola Ravioli is one of the best pasta we had on our entire trip to Italy!

We love this place We visited this restaurant 4 times during our stay in Sorrento, and every single visit was perfect! The food is absolutely the best we’ve had, and the service is just as incredible. They always went out of their way to accommodate us, and we felt so welcomed every time. It’s walk-in only with no bookings, but it was definitely worth the wait. The atmosphere felt like sitting in Nonna’s house, enjoying hearty Italian food at a very reasonable price – and it’s absolutely NOT a tourist trap. The ravioli was our favourite stand out dish, wow! A huge thank you to the owner Pepe and the amazing staff Angelo, Rosita, Mary & Andrea – you made our experience unforgettable. We’ve recommended this restaurant to all of our family and friends who have since visited Sorrento, and they’ve all raved about it (many going back multiple times too!). Can’t wait to visit again!
